Q. What is
the Writing Center?
A. The Writing Center opened in the fall of 1995 as a place where
Tech students could come to get one-on-one tutoring for their writing
projects. Tutors work with students for 30-minute sessions on a first-come,
first-served basis during open hours.
Q. Where are you
located and when are you open?
A. We're located in the Fidel Center room 275 (to the right of the staircase on the second floor). We're open
M-F; for the most current schedule, please see the Hours
and Location page.
Q. Who works in the
Writing Center?
A. The Writing Center is staffed by Humanities faculty and also
by trained peer tutors. While chances are good that your very own English
professor will have some open hours, we recommend that you visit with
another tutor to get a different perspective on your writing.
Q. Do I have
to make an appointment?
A. In general the Writing Center is first-come, first-served during
its open hours. However, if you work well with a certain tutor and wish
to make sure to get in to see him/her, either stop by the center or email
us, and we'll make sure you get an appointment with your preferred consultant.
Q. What kind of
writing issues do you work with?
A. In short, all kinds. We help with brainstorming, planning, drafting,
and revising. We will also help clear up persistent grammar issues that
may be challenging you. While our tutors are not trained ESL specialists,
we will be happy to try to assist students with ESL issues during our
regular half-hour sessions.
Q. Can I bring
in a résumé or a job application?
A. Absolutely. We help with all kinds of writing-not just class
papers. You may bring in grad school applications, résumés,
grant proposals, even short stories and poetry. We'll be happy to give
you feedback, and if we know of a certain tutor who specializes in the
type of writing you bring in, we'll help you set up an appointment with
that person.
Q. Can you
just proofread my paper for me?
A. We prefer to help students develop writing skills that will
eventually make them expert writers and editors themselves. So, we don't
offer a proofreading service. We will, however, clarify grammar issues
that keep coming up in your writing if you tell us what they are.
Q. My paper is due
in a half-hour; can you look at it?
A. We're dedicated to helping you improve your writing skills.
A fifteen-minute consultation is not enough time for us to thoroughly
analyze your paper or for you to make changes that reflect your own voice
and ideas. Rather, as soon as you know when your paper is due, plan to
come see us a few days before you have to hand it in. You will find the
consultation much more satisfying and will produce a better paper.
