Project slide: The NMT Women's Resource Center

On 27. June 2001, a meeting was held in the Brown Hall conference room to discuss women's issues at New Mexico Tech. The goal was to identify ways to develop or create an environment here at New Mexico Tech that would be positive and supportive for the women of our community.

The possibility of starting a Women's Resource Center at New Mexico Tech was brought up and generated a lot of enthusiasm! Some of the aspects, resources and offerings we thought of immediately were:

• The Center would be safe place for all women – safe in all senses, a place where you could exhale
• Lounge space and study space
• A place women could go to various offerings without registering or needing to sign up
• Possible offerings might include:
  • informal get-togethers
  • stress reduction/yoga
  • sponsored discussion on various topics (sexuality, eating disorders, career opportunities, outreach)
  • guest speakers and workshop leaders
  • videos
• The Center could serve as sponsor of other campus happenings: speaker series, brownbag lunch events, etc.

"Although New Mexico Tech does not yet have a women's resource center..." That's what we wrote on the Project slide for this website. We chose the word "yet" intentionally and hopefully, and we are delighted to see our work really beginning.

Please send us your ideas: what you would like to see in a Women's Resource Center – what types of events, guest speakers, print resources, even furniture! If you have suggestions about access hours, where to locate the Center, or possible funding sources, please let us know.
