Gateway Sites

The National Women's Health Information Center

NWHIC is a project of the Office on Women's Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services which was established in 1991. NWHIC is a first-rate gateway to a vast array of women's health information resources allowing visitors to read and download a wide variety of materials developed by HHS, other Federal agencies, and private sector resources.

National Women's Health Resource Center

The NWHRC web site is a clearinghouse for women's health information with a Health Center covering over seventy-five topics ranging from aging to weight management.

The National Guideline Clearinghouse

The National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines from government and professional organizations. One can search the database by keyword, disease/condition, treatment/intervention or organization.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

This web site is an important resource for complementary and alternative medicine information and is nicely divided into a section for patients and practitioners and another for researchers.

New York Times' Women's Health Site

This site, part of the New York Times website, includes a pull-down menu titled "Women's Resources" that links to pages with information on many health subjects and annotated lists of relevant links.

HealthWeb: Women's Health

HealthWeb is a list of non-commercial, health-related, Internet-accessible resources developed by cooperating university libraries. The information is very dense, but wide-ranging.

Associations

Society for Women's Health Research

For an overview of women's health research there is no better starting point than this web site which includes an annual collection of scientific research findings from medical/health groups, university-based research, the National Institutes of Health and private industry.

American Medical Women's Association 

AMWA is an organization of 10,000 women physicians and medical students dedicated to serving as a unique voice for women's health and the advancement of women in medicine. The AMWA web site is a valuable resource for finding authoritative women's health information.

American Medical Association

AMA's web site offers two excellent sections for women's health information. Under Consumer Health Information, one can link to the Women's Health page, which offers easy-to-understand information on topics such as breast cancer, caring for your body, menopause, osteoporosis and contraceptive choices. In the Journals section, is a link to JAMA's Women's Health Information Center.

Fertility & Family Planning

Planned Parenthood Federation of America 

This web site offers an impressive array of factual information on birth control methods, sexually transmitted infections, safer sex, abortion and guides for pregnancy and parenting. A directory of Planned Parenthood Health Centers allows searching by zip code, state name or by clicking on a United States map.

American Society for Reproductive Medicine 

ASRM is devoted to advancing knowledge and expertise in reproductive medicine and biology and promoting the study of reproduction and reproductive disorders. The ASRM web site is logically organized with large sections designed for patients, health professionals and media professionals.

National Adoption Information Clearinghouse

NAIC is a service of the Children's Bureau in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The value of this web site lies in its three searchable databases.

Abortion Clinics OnLine

Abortion Clinics OnLine is a directory of websites of over 200 providers of abortion services and other reproductive health care. Visitors can view clinic lists organized by category (e.g. late abortion, general anesthesia, emergency contraception), alphabetically, or by state.

CancerNet (National Cancer Institute)

An authoritative source of current cancer information, this site is highly recommended for health professionals, basic researchers, patients and anyone interested in learning more about this complex topic.

National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations

The NABCO web site is an excellent place to find current breast cancer and breast health material, information about breast cancer research and events, and resources for further information.

National Cervical Cancer Coalition

This web site is recommended for its resources directed at patients and their families, and for its up-to-date information on cervical cancer research and treatment.

National Ovarian Cancer Coalition

The NOCC web site provides useful information about ovarian cancer and a support network for women affected by the disease. One can read up on prevention methods, risk factors and symptoms and find sources for further information.

The AHA's Women's Web site, also called "Take Wellness to Heart", is a premier resource for those who want factual information on women's heart disease and stroke, as well as the related problem of high blood pressure.

CenterWatch Clinical Trials Listing Service

CenterWatch offers an international listing of clinical trials, research studies that test a new treatment. This web site holds a wealth of information related to clinical trials, such as a listing of more than 41,000 government- and industry-sponsored clinical trials, as well as new drug therapies recently approved by the FDA.

DES (diethylstilbestrol)

DES Action USA

DES is a synthetic form of estrogen that was prescribed from the early 1940s until 1971 to help women with certain complications of pregnancy. This web site is an authoritative source of current information about DES and health risks and care for DES daughters, sons and women who took DES.

Diabetes

American Diabetes Association

Patients, physicians, researchers and the general public will find valuable information on this web site. A major section on diabetes information links to full-text documents on the two types of diabetes, nutrition, exercise, recipes, recommendations and special sections for the newly diagnosed and African-Americans.

This web site offers a wide range of helpful material written for the newly diagnosed HIV positive woman. One can read about HIV transmission, opportunistic infections that affect only women, and treatment options ranging from antivirals and prophylactics to alternative therapies.

This web site's abundance of full-text information on specific diseases makes it an excellent starting point for finding reliable STD facts and information.

The NIMH web site is an excellent resource for information on anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, bipolar disorder, child and adolescent mental health, children & violence, depression, learning disabilities, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and social phobias.

The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information

The NCADI web site has a substantial collection of prevention, intervention and treatment resources designed for the general public, teachers, parents, youth and prevention/treatment professionals. The best way to access information is to search one of the site's twelve databases such as the Prevention Materials Database (PMD) and the Treatment Resource Database (TRD).

National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders

The ANAD web site has authoritative, factual information on definitions, warning signs, studies and therapies used in treating anorexia and bulimia.

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network

The RAINN web site is useful for those seeking a local crisis center and anyone wanting to learn more about rape, abuse and incest. Melpomene Institute

Melpomene Institute helps girls and women of all ages link physical activity and health through research, publication and education. The main feature of the site is the Library, a collection of two dozen subjects ranging from body image to women of color. Each subject links to a full-text document and related web resources.

The North American Menopause Society

The NAMS web site is an effective tool for learning about menopause and locating related resources.
