It occurred to me that the problem might be the large graph objects in the file, so I copied and pasted the document into a new document piece by piece. When we discovered which object it was, we deleted it from Word and recopied it from Excel and were able to save it. My guess is that Excel doesn't like it when a large graph is modified from Word, but I'm not sure why that is or at what point it starts being too large.
