There are two problems here actually. The registry entry, and the driver. The "can't find entry in registry" error message is usually because someone is trying to start the scanner software before it's been recognized on the USB bus. I reproduced this by starting the scanner software as soon as I could get to it. If I waited 30 seconds to a minute (long enough for windows to finish recognizing hardware on the USB bus) and loaded the software, it came up fine.
The "no scanner present" is a driver problem and a windows"ism". I have had this happen before where a device simply forgets where the drivers are. Everything is in the correct place, it just seems to not see it. It's probably because of how we add drivers to the template for hardware that doesn't exist on the template machine. I'll look at a fix.
