Computer Assisted Mathematics Instruction (CAMI)

The Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base is transferring advanced technologies to the New Mexico educational community in order to support and enhance the learning of math, science, and English skills. The Computer Assisted Mathematics Instruction (CAMI) project was piloted in 1992 at two New Mexico schools and was greatly expanded at the request of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The Air Force Research Laboratory provided each participating school with a computer lab equipped with artificial intelligence-based Fundamental Skills Training (FST) tutors developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas. The three FST tutors (the Intellitutor, Instruction in Scientific Inquiry Skills (ISIS) and MAESTRO) were designed to emulate the qualities of a good human tutor.

The Intellitutor software focuses on how to solve math word problems which cover a wide variety of math topics. ISIS assists students in learning to use the scientific method. The MAESTRO tutor helps students organize their ideas, and then draft and revise an essay.

The FST tutors are currently being used in entry-level high school classes in math, science, and English. In addition, use of the tutors is being piloted in non-traditional education settings and by students with learning disorders.
