Science and Mathematics Education Improvement Program

The Secretary of Defense shall:
- Award grants to students enrolled in scientific and engineering disciplines at higher education institutions
- In coordination with the Secretary of Education, establish programs for improving the mathematics and scientific knowledge and skills of elementary and secondary school students and faculty
- Grant proceeds shall be distributed to the higher education institution on behalf of student upon student enrollment in the institution
- Amount of grant does not exceed student's cost of attendance and is not reduced based on student's receipt of other forms of Federal student financial assistance, but may affect eligibility for other Federal assistance
- Priority given to those grants that stimulate the interest of women and members of minority groups in pursuing scientific and engineering careers. Financial need of these applicants may be considered in determining eligibility
