Description


Manufacturing Engineering Education: Grant Program

In consultation with the Secretary of Education, the Director of the National Science Foundation, and the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Secretary of Defense shall:

  • Establish a program which makes grants to institutions of higher education (or consortia of such institutions) to support existing or new programs in manufacturig engineering education
  • New programs may be considered for grant regardless of their position within or with regard to an institution's school of engineering
  • Of the total number of grants awarded, at least one third shall be awarded to new programs with consideration to avoiding geographical concentration of grant awards
  • With the Director of the National Science Foundation, enter into an agreement to ensure that the grant program is fully coordinated with similar existing programs of the National Science Foundation and shall solicit grant proposals from institutions of higher education in the US
  • Programs supported by this grant shall be conducted at either graduate or undergraduate level or both and shall be consolidated and integrated multidisciplinary programs of education containing multidisciplinary instruction, opportunities for student work experience and faculty and student research directly related to manufacturing science and technology
  • Grant applications shall be evaluated on the basis of merit and must meet minimum requirements for consideration
  • Financial assistance may not exceed 50 percent of the estimated cost of carrying out the activities proposed
