Description


Department of Defense Cooperative Education Programs

Directors of defense laboratories shall:

  • Establish cooperative work-education programs for undergraduate and graduate students, in association with one or more public or private colleges or universities in the US
  • Without regard to applicable non-statutory limitation on number of authorized personnel or on aggregate amount of any personnel cost, directors of defense laboratories may:
    • Offer participation in the cooperative work-education program to a student and appoint such student to an entry-level position of employment
    • Pay such person a rate of basic pay, competitive with other similar industry-sponsored entry-level work-education positions, not to exceed the maximum rate of pay provided for GS-9
    • Pay all travel expenses between the college or university, not more than six round trips per years and all or part of such fees, charges, and costs as tuition, matriculation fees, charges for library and laboratory services, materials, and supplies and the purchase or rental price of books
    • As a condition for receiving payments may require a written agreement to continue employment in the laboratory, or may make such payments without requiring an agreement
