To save space on our system, the TCC maintains a quota limit for your account. Getting back under quota generally means deleting or compressing files. If at all possible, we want all TCC users to manage their own accounts.
There is a separate quota for your email INBOX. Note: This is only for your INBOX, other folders count towards your account quota.
To find out the status of both of your quotas, you can log into the TCC's Webmail page.
To get back under your INBOX quota, you will need to remove mail. You have three options:
If you are at the limit on both your INBOX quota and your account quota at the same time you may have trouble deleting or moving mail. Please see this help page.
Your options for managing TCC account files vary depending on whether you are using a TCC computer, and whether you use Windows/Mac/Linux or some other OS.
Your first resource will be the User Consultant on duty in Speare 5. The UC should be able to answer any account questions you may have and help you with the process of managing your files.
Due to our system setup, it is preferable to use a TCC Linux computer to manage your files instead of a TCC Windows computer. The reason is that our Windows computers copy data at login and logout instead of immediately upon file operations. So even if you delete a file from Windows, it may return once you log off.
In the default TCC Linux interface (Gnome Desktop on Fedora Core), you can use the "Places" menu at the top of your screen to go to your home folder to see and manage your files. If you have any questions, the UC will be happy to help.
The easiest way to manage your account from a non-TCC Windows computer is to use WinSCP, a free program. You can download WinSCP from the main site at this link or from the TCC's FTP server, here. When prompted, use "linux.nmt.edu" as the host and your TCC username and password in the username and password fields. Clicking "Login" will bring up a security warning for the first time connecting to linux, click "Yes" to dismiss it. A window with your TCC files on the right and your local computer's files on the left will appear, allowing you to manage files from there.
OS X and Linux operating systems generally support "ssh" which can be used to log in to TCC computers. Type "ssh username@linux.nmt.edu" to connect to one of our login servers, and you will be presented with a Linux command prompt for file management.
