Selecting a programming language

C and C++ are most commonly used for system programming.
Python is a general-purpose language for rapid prototyping and systems programming.
Java is used for embedded applications, particularly interactive Web pages.
The Perl language is the "Swiss Army Chainsaw" of systems programming tools. (The author interprets this to mean that it does many things, none of them elegantly.)
The Eiffel language is an object-oriented language of recent vintage.
The Icon programming language is a general-purpose higher-level language.
Lisp and Scheme are indispensable for serious students of programming.
tcl and tk are tools for rapid prototyping of X-Window system applications.
The awk language is a pattern scanning and processing language.
