With its emphasis on basic sciences, New Mexico Tech's program has unique strengths. Unlike students in other technical communication programs, students at New Mexico Tech must take the same basic core of math and science required of New Mexico Tech's science and engineering majors. In addition, our students are required to complete 12 additional hours of coursework in a scientific or engineering discipline. This requirement ensures that graduates from the program have a solid foundation in a technical or scientific field, and it allows them to communicate effectively with specialists.
Another strength of the TC program at NMT is the Corporate Advisory Board, which is composed of practicing and professional technical communicators. These advisors help ensure that what students learn in their courses will be needed and used in practice. Once a year the Corporate Advisory Board convenes on campus to provide input and help steer the program. Members also attend classes and meet with students individually to provide feedback about student projects. Classes in the TC program are traditionally geared towards teaching students basic and advanced knowledge in technical communication, and in applying that knowledge in various practicums--either through class or client-based projects. Students get hands on experience in a variety of currently used technologies and tools, and use them to create a wealth of real-world products (like this website). |
