Employment Agencies

Career Services accepts job listings from employment agencies, or "head hunters." We do not, however, send information about students to these third parties. Students who wish to contact employment agencies on their own are welcome to do so, but we recommend that you consider the following points.

Read and follow all instructions carefully!

  • Know what you want to do before you contact any agencies. The business of employment agencies is job placement, not career counseling.
  • Look for agencies that specialize in the type or level of job you are seeking.
    Arrange appointments to determine the best agencies for you.

  • Ask questions such as: How long have you been in business? What companies and industries do you work with? Do you distribute unsolicited résumés?

  • Ask to meet with the person who will work with you. Do you feel a rapport with this person? Do you feel he or she can help you find the kind of position you are seeking? Will he or she continue to work with you if you turn down an offer?

  • Make sure the agency is licensed. Check with the state's Department of Labor or the local Better Business Bureau for information.

  • Ask about fee arrangements before you go on a job interview. Professional jobs are almost always employer-paid-fee (EPF), not applicant-paid-fee (APF). Insist that all fee arrangements be outlined on any contracts before you sign them.

  • Read all contracts carefully. Ask questions about anything that isn't clear. Be sure there are no blank spaces on any contracts you sign.

  • Clarify what happens if a job doesn't work out. Will you be liable for any fees? Have all terms put in writing on the contract.

The more agencies you list with, the more job openings you'll be exposed to and the better your chances are. Follow up with regular phone calls to the agencies.
