Off-Campus Cooperative Education
Off-campus cooperative education is a program in which students alternate periods, usually six months long, of full-time semiprofessional employment in their chosen field with periods of full-time academic study. The on-the-job training supplements the academic program, provides experience, and assists in financing the student's education.
This program is open to students currently enrolled full time at New Mexico Tech who are U.S. citizens or have permanent resident visas, and have completed at least 30 credit hours at Tech with a minimum grade-point average of 2.2. They must have the approval of their advisor and/or department chairman. Students are selected for the off-campus work phases by the organizations employing them and must maintain eligibility by job performance, as well as by acceptable academic standards.
The participating student enrolls in a special independent study course, earning one (1) credit hour in his or her major field during each off-campus work period. The enrollment entitles the student to the rights and privileges of students, including student insurance and certification of full-time student status, during the work phase. This program extends the period normally required to complete a degree program by six months or more, depending on the number of work phases.
To enroll in this program or to receive more information, a student should see the Director of Career Services.
