CONSTITUTION
Article 1: Statement of Purpose
We, the Shooting Sports Club at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, are devoted to the education, training and enjoyment of the shooting sports. We teach safety, handling and marksmanship with firearms and air rifles.
Article 2: Membership
Section 1: Membership Eligibility
Membership is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Membership privileges include voting during elections and participation in off-campus shooting matches.
Section 2: Voting Eligibility
Voting members are limited to those who are students, faculty, and staff of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Only student members who have paid their Student Activity Fee may vote on the expenditure of Student Association funds.
Section 3: Faculty Advisor
The Shooting Sports Club at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology will have a minimum of one member of faculty to advise the club on administrative issues, as well as to provide professional insight in club activities. This faculty member will receive all benefits of membership.
Section 4: Suspension and Revocation of Membership
Due to the safety issues associated with shooting sports, members are expected to conduct themselves in a safe and ethical manner. Should an attendee act in a manner contrary to be safe and ethical practices at an industrial site, this attendee will be barred from attending future meetings. While the Shooting Sports Club at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology encourage all interested students in becoming members, to allow habitually dangerous and unprofessional behavior to continue participating in club events is a disservice to the club, the hobby, and the university. A 2/3 majority vote or a recommendation for suspension by the faculty advisor will determine suspension.
Article 3: Officers
Section 1: Officers for Charter Club
The leadership of the Shooting Sports Club at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology will be comprised of a President and Vice President
Section 2: Officer Selection
Officers shall be elected by a majority vote in attendance at the first meeting each fall semester. Should the need arise for new offices, a motion can be made to elect another officer at the next meeting. Nominations should be issued at the meeting when the motion is presented. Examples of new offices would be a vice president, webmaster, treasurer, etc. Once a new office has been established, this document will be amended to reflect the duties of the new office.
Section 3: Duties
President: The president will arrange and conduct all meetings in an orderly fashion. He or she will also serve as a liaison with the Socorro Gun Club, guest speakers, the university, and other interested parties. The president will also maintain and update all paperwork.
Vice President: The vice president will preside over the meeting, should the president be absent. The vice president will also aid in taking meeting minutes, meetings with interested parties, etc.
Section 4: Resignation of Officers
In the event that an officer can no longer serve his or her term in office, the membership will hold an election to select a replacement officer for the remainder of the term.
Section 5: Suspension of Officers
To insure that officers abide by the same code of conduct as members, officers can be suspended as well. To suspend an officer for dangerous or unethical behavior requires a 2/3 majority vote or a recommendation from the faculty advisor. The officer’s membership is suspended for one semester, and he or she cannot run for office for one year. The open office will be filled in the same manner as listed in Article 3, Section 4.
Article 4: Meetings
Section 1: Business Meetings
Business meetings shall be held at least once a month at a time and place decided by popular vote at the first meeting of each semester. Business meetings will present administrative issues, budget, and voice various opinions and directions. They are open to the public.
Section 2: Air Rifle Practice
Air rifle practice meets once a week, at a time announced in Scope and on the website. These are open to the public.
Section 3: Civilian Marksmanship Program Training
Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) training will be conducted roughly once a month. The times and dates will be announced at both the business meetings and the air rifle practice sessions.
Section 4: Competitions
Throughout the year, various competitions will be brought to the attention of the participants. Anyone may attend the competitions, though the club will sponsor two club members to compete in each of a list of competitions, which will defray the cost away from the individual shooter.
Article 5: Amendments
A motion to amend this constitution can be made at any business meeting. This motion will be carried, provided it received a majority vote, and will be distributed by email or hard copy by the next business meeting.
Article 6: Ratification
This Constitution shall be ratified by a majority vote of the membership present at the first business meeting. New officers shall be elected at ratification, and thereafter as described in Article 3.
