Student Research Symposium

Communicate to Educate is the focus of the NMT Student Research Symposium (SRS), an annual event where NMT students present their research to NMT, Socorro, and the larger STEM community. Students at all levels, from freshman to graduate, have the opportunity to participate in research; the SRS provides a forum to share the exciting projects they've been working on!

Dates / Locations / Programs

April 19, 2017 - Fidel Ballrooms, Oral Presentations 6:00 - 8:00 pm

April 20, 2017 - Macey Center, 3 Minute Speech Competition 9:30 - 11:30 am
Poster Presentations, 11:30 am - 4:30 pm


Students can present in 3 ways:
  • Oral Presentation
      • Oral Presentation Details
      • An 8-minute slide presentation followed by two Q&A
      • Eight Oral Presentation applicants (1 presenter, no teams) will be invited to present (based on SRS Committee reviews); all other Oral Presentation applicants will be guaranteed a Poster Presentation spot.
      • Each Oral Presenter will receive two tickets for the dinner (one of them, for one guest) and a Tech Tools gift bag (SmartCharge phone/pad portable charger, 16GB flash drive, 200-sheet pad of engineering paper).
  • Poster Presentation
      • Poster Presentation Details
      • 1-hour sessions where presenters stand by their poster and interact with attendees
      • Poster presenters may also register to participate in the 3 Minute Speech Competition
  • 3 Minute Speech Competition Presentation
      • 3 Minute Speech Competition Presentation Rules
      • 1 static slide, 3 minute talk - ideal for students just starting their research
      • Students may do a 3 Minute Speech Presentation with a Poster presentation or by itself (spaces are limited).
      • Prizes for the top 3 competitors are:
        1st place - Three external hard drives.
        2nd place - Two 1TB external hard drives.
        3rd place - One 1TB external hard drive.
The Student Research Symposium is an opportunity for you to:
  • Showcase your knowledge and skills by giving a presentation or displaying a poster to peers, professional researchers, and engineers.
  • Communicate your research or design to people outside your field.
  • See what your peers are doing and get ideas for what your future research might be!
The Student Research Symposium's Mission Statement:

The New Mexico Tech Student Research Symposium is a campus-wide co-curricular event open to all New Mexico Tech students, organized by faculty, students, administrators, and staff.

Our mission is to:

Provide a forum for students to voluntarily share knowledge with their peers, faculty, community, guests, and reviewers through oral or poster presentations and abstracts of their research/design projects.

Encourage students to develop professional oral presentation, writing, and document design skills to communicate their research/design to a multi-disciplinary audience.
