A Russian chess grandmaster once said that the way to become an international grandmaster was to lose 10,000 games. Similarly, throw away five hundred kinglet shots to get one like the first frame here. As for the second frame, it's a cheap way to salvage a shot that is generally out of focus, but I also like the way it shows details of kinglet feet in the sub-millimeter range. The third shot is also less than perfect, but it shows this kinglet's bright orange tongue.

Lots of people saw this bird this weekend, despite its general wariness. I doubt I could have gotten even this shot if the bird's view of me hadn't been blocked by the tree. It flipped from the southwest corner of the trap all the way to the northeast corner to get away from me, in a beeline about 4' off the deck.

Because the breast spots are so dark and nearly round, I wanted these birds to be the Wood Thrush. But all showed the rufous tail, and in none of them did the spotting extend far enough posteriorly compared to a Wood Thrush.

If someone had videotaped the end of my search for what was quite the rarity of the day here, the video would have been a real contender for funny video contests. Everyone was seeing this bird but me for the first 2.5 hours or so I was in the trap. Finally in late morning Kim Score (to whom I will be eternally grateful) called the bird in plain sight. However, for a klutz of my magnitude, it is difficult to move around all that dead wood even slowly and carefully, so when I tried to move the intervening fifty yards or so somewhat briskly, I managed to execute a maneuver that Today's Young People call a “faceplant.” It's hard for me to get up even when I'm not wearing a giant camera rig, so it was a couple of minutes of groaning and bad language before I made it over to where Kim was still faithfully tracking the bird. So I paid for these photos quite literally in blood. Well worth it: along with the Laughing Gull I found 2016-09-30 at Brantley, these are the first two state birds I've added since the Black-legged Kittiwake I found 2014-10-12. I'm now at 397 for New Mexico and hope to break 400 before I die.
