Not well-lit, but the photos show the “spectacles” formed of the buffy eye-ring and the indistinct buffy patch between the eye and the bill, and the warm buff ground color of the lower face and upper chest. The tail appeared the same cool brown as the back, not redder than the back as on Hermit Thrush; however, the absence of this contrast can be a treacherous mark, because lighting conditions can mute that contrast.

Another bird that flummoxed me in the field. My first guess, based on the gray wash on the back of the head, was Bonaparte's or Franklin's, but the large bill with prominent gonydeal angle rules them out. I thought, kittiwake? But not with a black bill. Another point of confusion is that this bird lacks the gray wash on the hindneck and breast depicted in Sibley's second winter Laughing Gull.
Gary Froehlich and Sandy Williams called it. Later I found out this bird has been showing up here infrequently. When I dragged out my copy of P.J. Grant's Gulls: a guide to identification, it matched most of his characters for a second-summer bird: “wings uniform grey, with black tip extending along leading of outer wing; white tips on primaries small or lacking [small in this bird]; ...hood partially or fully developed, underparts white and legs usually dull reddish.” I've enhanced the shadow detail in the second photo to show the dull red leg color, and the third shows the red foot.

By the streaked nape, the lack of a strong dark line behind the eye, and the streaked crown with a light median stripe. The first frame is a bit of a novelty shot: the bird was shaking its head too quickly to be frozen at a shutter speed of 1/800.

This species often trips me up, but the first two frames show the rufous shoulder patch that is a definite clue. The third frame would make a good quiz shot: the complete white eyering shows, but the white outer tail feathers are not obvious, and the rusty shoulder is absent.
