Mallard # @Bosque del Apache NWR
Grebe, Pied-billed 1 @Bosque del Apache NWR
This photo works as graphic art as well as ornithology. I like the texture of the ripples as this little guy goes full steam toward me.

Here, as so often at the Bosque Boardwalk pond, keeping company with two Spiny Softshells, Apalone spinifera.

Hummingbird, Calliope 1 @Bosque del Apache NWR
A stakeout, photographed a few feet away from the feeder at the visitor center. Even in my standard 1024x768 Web crop, the photos show a satisfying amount of feather detail.
Hummingbird, Rufous # @Bosque del Apache NWR
Flycatcher, Ash-throated 1 @Bosque del Apache NWR: North Seasonal Road
Kingbird, Western
6 @Luis Lopez to Bosque del Apache
These are good reference photos for midsummer Western Kingbirds. Note that a line drawn from the chin to the vent never crosses any abrupt color changes. That same line drawn on a Cassin's would suddenly go from white to medium-dark gray right at the top of the breast. Note also the ends of the rectrices show traces of wear, but nothing you'd call a light tail-tip.

Raven, Chihuahuan
1 @Luis Lopez to Bosque del Apache
# @Bosque del Apache NWR
Vocalizations: ID by voice.
In the second photo, the foreground bird shows some pink color in the skin just below the lower mandible. Not sure if this is injury or just juvenal bill growth.
In the last photo, the left-hand bird is in mid-hop. Yes, I know it is unforgiveable anthropomorphization to infer concepts like “fun” here. Maybe a nematode bit him on a sensitive spot or something.
