Lots of tiny yellow butterflies in the nearby alfalfa field led to a flycatcher feeding frenzy. According to local farmer Tom Hyden, the butterflies are Cabbage Loopers.

This one really threw me. It looks too pale on the head, and too long-tailed, to be a Western Kingbird. I was trying to make it into a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher or perhaps a hybrid. However, an expert (who wishes to remain anonymous) says, “typical juvenile Western molting into its first adult or basic plumage, as indicated by the darker gray color of the new lesser coverts on the wing.”

Compare this photo to yesterday's; I think this may be the bird, or similar to the bird, that I miscalled as a possibly Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Today's bird appeared to me to have olive-green shoulders, as if it had an algae growth there. The head was quite light in color. Today's bird seems quite clearly an immature Western Kingbird.

Jerry Oldenettel found this bird and told me about it around 11am. I headed right out and found the bird right away.
