2007-11-10: NM: Socorro County

Notable:  Slate-colored Junco
@SNA: Socorro Natural Area
I've been hearing about this place and seeing signs for it in Lemitar, but this was my first visit. Take the Lemitar exit off I-25, head east, and follow the signs. The site is a slice of relatively unspoiled land just west of the low-flow channel, and there is a good, solid footbridge over to the river dike not far to the south. A developed resource with tables, a covered party area, a real latrine, and lots of groomed trails and interpretive signs.

Working through some old cottonwoods near the low-flow channel.
I realize these aren't too rare here in winter, but seeing one is a different matter. I caught the slightest motion on a trunk, and froze, thinking that the habitat and action suggested Brown Creeper. After a few minutes I moved on slowly and found it again and got a decent look.
