Driving toward Meeteetse from the west on the paved road, I noticed a good-sized gamebird standing under a road sign a few years off the pavement. I got the car stopped and had to back about 15 car-lengths to get to the spot. When I got there, it was still standing there. It continued to stay nearly motionless as I glassed it, checked the field guide, and snapped one miserable picture on the disposable camera. After about ten minutes, when I'd checked it out thoroughly, I drove away and it was still there.
Description: Overall size maybe pheasant-sized or a bit more. General coloration light sandy brown, with some clean black features on the folded wings. Tail plain, pointed. Head rounded, brown with a thin white line through the eye, curving down posteriorly. Belly was in the grass and not visible.
