Grebe, Least @Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge
We spotted this tiny grebe just after entering the tour loop. A moment of low comedy ensued as Leonard tried to raise his binoculars, only to find that I had latched his binocular strap into my seat belt latch. Fortunately I was able to free up his binoculars while the bird was still in view.

Hawk, Crane @Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge
This bird was the hot topic everywhere we went, because it was a first US record and stayed around for a couple of weeks. We were given precise directions: walk down this trail and look at the trees to the right, and there it was. No photos, as the bird immediately fled directly away from us.

Birding here is extremely frustrating, as always with longspurs. We were using a telescope at about 80x to ID the various birds out on the turf farm. The photos are abysmal, but we were confident of the ID based on good scope views.
