Socorro (home to New Mexico Tech) is a sunny, friendly town located in central New Mexico. The town (pop. 9,000) is located in the Rio Grande valley, at an elevation of 4,600 ft. Albuquerque is located 75 miles to the north. Socorro is in the heart of ranching and farming territory and its main industries are education and research. The two biggest employers in town are New Mexico Tech and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Socorro offers a pleasant combination of a rural New Mexico lifestyle and a small college town.
