On Tuesday, April 15, the R&ED Office received the following notice from the Sandia University Research Program:
We sincerely regret that Sandia's Nuclear Weapons program is unable to support SURP new starts in FY09 because of severe budget cuts. We plan to honor FY09 continuation requests for a second year, subject to proposal review and approval; but, the plan is to discontinue the program in FY10. Sandia will continue supporting research investments through line organization program activities, as always. Sandia is strongly committed to nurturing a mutually beneficial relationship with NM Tech, specifically through progress on the goals outlined in our MOU. Jim Chavez, as your Campus Executive, will continue to invest in two Graduate Research Fellows, representing a corporate investment of $50K annually. NM Tech ranks #3 in research dollars invested by Sandia collaborators at an average of $1,647,968M per year over the past three years. Thus, the $93K average per year that was invested by SURP in that same time period is very likely to be made up in other investments through different funding sources. In FY08, the SURP investment will be $120k. In FY09, there is a possibility of 2 continuation proposals being funded, at a $80-120k investment, assuming a favorable technical review. We apologize for the timing, as the new call for proposals only went out a week ago. Please contact me or Wendy Cieslak at 844-8633 if you have questions. Yolanda Phone: 505/284-2106
