The New Mexico Tech High Tech Ambassadors program has been an important part of the school for about 30 years. Never heard of it? Here’s a quick rundown of what it is: As a division of the Admissions Office, students volunteer to be “ambassadors” for the school at events to be the “face” of NMT. Ambassadors give tours to student groups and individual families, help with events such as Research at Tech Day, Exploration Day, Career Fair, Science Fair and Science Olympiad, 49ers Alumni Tours, and other events that need student volunteers. Yes, volunteers. High Tech Ambassadors don’t get paid, well not in the form of a paycheck anyhow. Students earn points based on the activities that they complete and are rewarded with prizes! Prizes typically include school supplies, NMT clothing, and gift cards to stores, restaurants, and iTunes. Volunteer work also looks good on a resume, and dedicated volunteers may even get a letter of recommendation if they ask. Campus tours are one of the most important aspects of a prospective student’s visit to campus. Having a student-led tour helps applicants see the school through the eyes of a fellow student and opens communication for questions the applicant may not feel comfortable asking recruiters. Ambassadors are also an important part of recruitment through Research at Tech Day and Exploration Day by answering questions and giving tours of campus to applicants and their families. Ambassadors also serve as judges for Science Olympiad and help with coordination of Science Fairs held at NMT sometimes. When Alumni visit for 49ers and haven’t been to campus for a while, Ambassadors are there to show them around the new buildings and help them dodge the on-going construction. The Admissions Office is always looking for dedicated volunteers to participate in the program. This year there are about 25 members signed up, but only around 10 active volunteers. Many students find it hard to volunteer while balancing the rigorous curriculum, work, and extra-curricular activities. The High Tech Ambassadors program works around your schedule and will never “assign” you an event without your permission. Interested volunteers should be motivated and excited about NMT and interested in recruiting prospective students. You can sign up next semester after you’ve registered for classes and set your work schedule so you’ll know when you’re available to volunteer.
