Validated: Alpha Sigma Kappa to Recognize Tech Chapter
The girls have worked hard for almost two years trying to find a sorority to join, organizing events on campus, and working towards being installed as a chapter.
The ladies have had many troubles getting to this point. With problems getting the school to recognize ASK as an organization on campus, something required for initiation, and endless paperwork to keep track of, the girls have really shown their dedication.
In between reports, the women of ASK Eta Colony have helped with many events for the school, like the M Mountain Run and the Board of Regents Retreat. The girls have held recruitment events each year near the beginning of each semester. Each day of recruitment week is filled with a fun activity for students.
Next semester's recruitment will take place the second week of school, but is already being planned. Between recruitments ASK Eta Colony have held several dances and other events for the student body, adding to the busyness of working towards becoming a chapter.
The ladies have also helped fundraise for charitable foundations with fun and yummy fundraisers. This semester ASK helped American Institute of Chemical Engineers put on the annual Pink Pong event which donated hundreds to breast cancer research at the Susan G. Kommen Foundation. Next semester the girls are holding a golf tournament fundraiser and a Locks of Love drive.
In addition to being active in the Tech Community, the members of ASK had to endure a long process in order for colony to become a fully recognized chapter.
The chapter as a whole must complete several objectives like numbers events held, members attended, reports given, and hours completed. Some events must have 100 percent attendance. The girls must complete these requirements in addition to maintaining good academic standing.
They are not allowed to miss events or meetings because of large amounts of homework or the need to study.
The women of ASK must also learn what it is to be a sister and the history of the sorority. After these events are completed the girls are interviewed by national members and given a exam they must complete and pass in order to become an initiate. If a colony member passes, then she is allowed to become a full-fledged member of the sorority..
When the colony becomes a chapter, the chapter and its members gain more access to the national organization. The colony period is for the national organization to determine if the colony members can meet the requirements of the sorority. ASK has high standards of excellence for both sisterhood and academia.
The girls of ASK have fully completed all of the requirements this semester and will become a full chapter on Saturday. They will be tested, interviewed, and installed if all goes well. Later in the evening a banquet will be held for the ladies to celebrate their achievements. The banquet is invitation only and the dress code is formal.
Congratulations to the ladies of Alpha Sigma Kappa, the first sorority of New Mexico Tech
