Date Rape and Blackout Sex: Staying Smart, Staying Safe

First of all, you should never drink alone; I don’t care who what race, creed, gender or religion you think you are, or how high you think your tolerance for alcohol is. When you go to a party, you should use the buddy system, or know someone that will take care of you if you plan on drinking. Girls especially tend to get themselves into dangerous situations in this manner. Don’t provoke the possibility by being alone.

If you are throwing a party, know who is at your party, sometimes those that are underage can  get a bit overzealous and find themselves drinking when they shouldn’t be and drinking much more than they can handle.  In the state of New Mexico, you can get accused for distributing to a minor if you have underage people drinking at your party, and the consequences will not be pretty.

There are generally two levels of intoxication for most people: drunk, and blackout drunk.  When you get blackout drunk you are not only putting yourself in danger, but you might risk the possibility of having unprotected sex, or even getting what is termed “roofied” and hitting the floory.

Note that having blackout sex and date rape are distinguished to as two separate things; Blackout sex is when you lose inhibition due to alcohol; Date rape is when you have not given consent, or have been drugged with something that you yourself did not know you consumed. When you black out,  you do these things on your own accord, however your ability to remember them or give consent is hindered. When you are intoxicated,  you may have unprotected blackout sex, and do things that you would not do sober.  If you confuse these two situations, you may get yourself in a lot of trouble.

Date rape is not to be taken lightly. If you aren’t sure how to distinguish between the above situations, and you have been in them, you should go to the nurse immediately following the incident. Full drug  screens and std tests can be performed by simply drawing blood, and having it sent off to the lab. If you feel you have been raped, or have been raped, you should go to the nurse immediately, have both full  tests done, and keep in touch with the nurse for a pregnancy test. The school nurse recommends this check up be done immediately; Do not shower, and get checked out. The likelihood of being able to fix these sort of situations is reduced the more time that goes by, and It is always better to be safe than sorry.

When a person blacks out, 1/10 of these people do not remember whether or not they have had sex. A further 1/5 of these people obtain STI’s or STD’s at this time. No matter the case, you are just as legally and morally responsible during a drunken blackout as sober since you are still fully aware of what you are doing; you just won’t store it in your short term memory.

The nurse or your doctor can send for a full drug screen including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and rufilin and others if specified. STD tests include HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. The nurse personally recommends to try and avoid these dangerous situations “All the things your mom told you; She told you for a reason.”
