The campaign is a tool for all libraries to remind their communities of the programs, services and technologies they offer to all citizens.
The campaign theme is summed up in the logo @ your library. You will see a similar logo used throughout this newsletter. Remember that your ultimate search engine is @ New Mexico Tech Library.

National Library Week April 1-7, 2001
We are celebrating the beginning of a new era—the Digital Age. Similar to the printing press, the computer is now the new medium by which we can read books and articles. However, not everyone owns a computer. Consequently, libraries must bridge the gap between the rich and poor or the haves and have-nots. Libraries are for everyone, everywhere. Libraries are more than just storehouses of information and the preservers of the past. Libraries provide a safe place for people of all ages and of all nationalities. Thus, a library provides equality, freedom and knowledge for all. However, in order for our democracies to survive, we need an informed public. Thus, it is incumbent for all libraries to disseminate information not only among its constituents but to outsiders as well. Libraries must become the builders and uniters of communities.

Library Director Attends National Conference
Tech Library Director, Kay Krehbiel, attended the Association of College and Research Libraries National Conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, April 15 – 18.
Michael Hawley of MIT MEDIA Lab, who gave a humorous, illustrated talk on some possible developments in information and entertainment technology gave the kick-off speech. Hawley thinks that in the future we might find computer chips imbedded in salsa jars and milk jugs to tell us when the food item should be tossed out.
Another keynote was given by Patricia Limerick, Chair of the Center for the American West, University of Colorado-Boulder. Limerick is one of several contemporary historians who are challenging the myths and assumptions most folks, including historians, hold about the American frontier. These titles by Limerick are in Tech Library.
Desert Passages: Encounters with the American Deserts (E161.L56 1985)
Revealing Territory: Photographs of the Southwest (F787.K56 1992)
Sweet Medicine: Sites of Indian Massacres, Battlefields, and Treaties (E81.B73 1995)
On the program were other sessions on e-journals, e-books, ethical decisions, copyright and intellectual property, assessment of student learning, library services for distance learners, collaboration with faculty and other issues faced by academic librarians.
The ACRL meeting is the biggest conference for librarians in colleges and universities with almost 200 exhibitors and over 2000 registrants this year in Denver.

Tax Time at Tech Library
Well, it’s that time of year again, when everyone is trying to find the right tax form and get tax forms filed on time. Tech Library participates in the distribution of tax forms from both federal and state agencies. You can pick up a copy of the more common tax forms, or access tax forms on the web. From the Library’s new web page, select the What’s New link, then select the Federal and State Tax Forms link. Our new policy permits users to print out one free copy of tax forms (but no instructions, please). You can also make photocopies from our reproducible tax forms, available at the circulation desk.
While we are happy to provide access to tax forms, please be aware that we can not give tax advice.

Here is where people,
One frequently finds,
Lower their voices
And raise their minds.

Thoughts on Libraries
Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.
Walter Cronkite
The free access to information is not a privilege, but a necessity for any free society.
Edward Asner
Public libraries have been a mainstay of my life. They represent an individual’s right to acquire knowledge; they are the sinews that bind civilized societies the world over. Without libraries, I would be a pauper, intellectually and spiritually.
James Michener
Academic librarians answer 97 million reference questions each year – almost three times the attendance at college football games.
College libraries receive less than less than 3 cents of every dollar spent on higher education.
If the cost of gas had risen as fast as the cost of academic library periodicals since 1990, it would cost $3.00 a gallon to put fuel in your car.
