August/September 2002
WELCOME NEW STUDENTS AND FACULTY!!
WHAT’S NEW
New Library name!
As of March 1, 2002, we are no longer called "Tech Library." Our new official name is Joseph R. Skeen Library, Tech Skeen Library for short. The Library will be officially renamed at a dedication ceremony on Monday August 19. Congressman Skeen has announced that he will donate his papers and other memorabilia from his 22 years in Congress to the Library.
Pajama Pandemonium Among the
Periodicals!! See Librarians in their jammies!!
FOR FRESHMEN ONLY!
On Wednesday, August 28, the Library will close at the usual Break hour of 5:00 and reopen from 8:00 until midnight for a pajama party open to Freshmen only. In conjunction with the First Year Experience Program, Freshmen are invited to roam freely over all three floors of the Library and enjoy snacks, drinks, music provided by a DJ, a movie, a scavenger hunt, prizes, and to learn about what the Library has to offer. Pajamas are optional, but there will be prizes for the most original "nightwear." See librarians dressed as you've never seen them before. More information will be available: watch your mail!
New computers
In order to comply with campus-wide standards, the Library has purchased and will be installing new PCs throughout. These new computers will all be running Windows 2000 and should be faster and more efficient than some of the older machines now in use.
The same databases, indexes, and resources as before will be available.
Interlibrary Loan News
OCLC ILLiad Resource Management software (OCLC ILLiad) has entered the testing phase at NMT Skeen Library. The streamlined software package represents the most sophisticated document delivery service available to libraries. Through OCLC ILLiad, users will send and track their requests electronically through a windows based web interface.
After completing an initial profile, borrowers need only key in their user ID and password. The patron's profile information will be automatically inserted into subsequent requests. The new Interlibrary Loan interface is expected to 'go live' mid-semester Fall, 2002.
How long does ILL take?
Allow 1-3 weeks for books. For articles, allow 10-14 days.
Did you know?
The NMT Interlibrary Loan 2002 average 'turnaround time' for books and articles was 7.47 days.

Invitation for freshmen and new students.
Learn how to find your way around Skeen Library and earn a free, reusable copy card. You can take our self-paced, self-guided tour any time the library is open from Friday Aug. 23 through Sat. Aug. 31. The tour, which takes about 20 minutes, will introduce you to library building, our sources and services.
STAFF

The Library finally has a Systems Specialist in-house. Peter Martinez, who joined us in February, is working 30 hours a week keeping the Library's computer systems, PCs, peripherals and networks running smoothly. Pete is also the Library Webmaster and is responsible for all the changes you are seeing on our Web page.
Joani Shedivy, Information Literacy Librarian, has taken on even more duties in the absence of Louise Dano, Reference and Instruction Librarian. Government Documents continue to be ably handled by Lucinda Whitehorse.
NEW RESOURCES

Electronic Journals received by the Library in conjunction with the print version of a title are now available. Click on the link on the Library home page http://www.nmt.edu/~nmtlib/ and follow the instructions to view full-text articles. Currently, only journals that we receive through our serial vendor, EBSCO, are available. Coverage varies, from 10 years of back issues to only the current issue. Eventually, all e-journals the Library subscribes to will appear on the page. You may also link to an electronic journal through the Library's online catalog, LIBROS. Just search for your journal by title and click on the link that appears above the holdings information.
New in the Acquisitions Department
The Tech Skeen Library is the fortunate recipient of a generous donation made by Ms. Kathy Hedges and Mr. Walter Jon Williams. The donation has allowed for the library to expand its collection, and the donors permitted the Tech Student Association and the Graduate Student Association to make title selections. Some of the titles chosen and already in the collection are:
