Trips

Trip leader training-leader Mike Bilbo
On October 18 we'll meet at the Bunkhouse between 12:00-1:00 PM and get the
El Paso Archaeological Society (EPAS) ready and then take them on a cave
trip to the 1st Dragoon Inscription Site near the Lunchroom (less than
1/2-mile in) in Fort Stanton Cave.  So that will be training in visitor
management and cave-cultural interpretation for you.  On the 16th I'm going
to El Paso to give EPAS a lecture on the site and the Dragoons (who built
Fort Stanton).  Then 7:00 on Saturday morning I lead them from El Paso to
Fort Stanton and in the morning we visit some rock art sites and the old
fort.  And then to the Bunkhouse and cave trip.  The next day, Sunday, Oct.
19, our training group, minus EPAS, will go to Torgac's Cave and then
return to Socorro same day.  We'll be under the Fort Stanton Cave Study
Project permit for this training.
Let me know if you can go to this training, Oct. 18-19.  As soon as I have
the list, I'll go back over your assigned topics to see if there are any
changes or additions (Dan Hoff and Jeff Jackson signed up for the training
this meeting).  Be sure to pick up your copy of the Leave No Trace caving
booklet from Jane Overton.
If you can't go this time, then we'll schedule for a winter trip to Endless
Cave at McKittrick Hill, because of Roswell's bat hibernation closure,
which is Nov. 1-April 15 annually.
As I mentioned, this is also a pilot Leave No Trace Trainers Course
oriented to caves.  On completion of the training you will be a certified
LNT Trainer (Lee Walstad is already a certified LNT Trainer from a previous
class).  I'll also send Bill Murry a list of persons who are ready to be
BLM Fort Stanton Cave and Torgac's guides (you are required by Roswell Cave
Program to attend three trips to each cave as a guide-in-training).

Mapping and survey trips; a great way to learn about how to find and map caves.
