Dr. Yilmaz is currently a full professor
of Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT). He joined the Mechanical Engineering Department in
2006. Prior to that, he worked in the Mechanical Engineering Department at
He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical
His research is in the areas of combustion, CFD (computational fluid dynamics), renewable energy, internal combustion engines, and nonlinear structural mechanics and materials modeling.
Dr. Yilmaz is an active member of SAE, ASME, ASEE, NSPE, and serving as the Vice Chair of SAE International Education Board (EB) which oversees all education activities of SAE International serving more than 130,000 members globally. He is also the Chair of ASME-New Mexico Section and the Editor-In-Chief for the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants, along with being a committee member on the SAE ABET Board, whose mission is to provide accreditation for automotive engineering programs internationally. Within NSPE, he is the Southwest Regional Vice Chair of the Higher Education Interest Group, a member of NSPE National Membership Board, and ex-officio member of NSPE Young Engineers Resource Group.
Dr. Yilmaz is an ABET Program Evaluator (PEV) and coordinator for ABET accreditation in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NMT. He is the faculty advisor (founding) for SAE collegiate student chapter and NSPE student chapter at NMT. He also advises NMT ASME student chapter. In addition, he serves as the academic advisor to three competition based design clinic projects: SAE Mini-Baja, SAE Aero Design and Experimental Sounding Rocket. He is a volunteer and strong advocate for New Mexico STEM-H Connection and New Mexico MATHCOUNTS.
