What is Materials Engineering?
Materials science or materials engineering is an interdisciplinary field involving the properties of matter and its applications to various areas of science and engineering. This science investigates the relationship between the structure of materials and their properties. It includes elements of applied physics and chemistry, as well as chemical, mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. With significant media attention to nanoscience and nanotechnology in recent years, materials science has been propelled to the forefront at many universities.

What Sort of Jobs Do Materials Engineers Do?
Our graduates split evenly between jobs in industry,
government labs, and further education. In addition
to the obvious industries (metals, ceramics, polymers
and composite), our graduates take jobs in
electronics, petroleum, biological, and energy
industries.
What is NMT Materials Like?
Our department is friendly with a good rapport between students and teachers. Students take courses covering the core subjects of Polymers, Metals, Ceramics, and Composites. Laboratory intensive courses cover experimental methods and analysis. Finally, seniors take advanced electives in more targeted subjects such as Nano-materials, Electronic Materials, and Computer Simulation. Student research is encouraged.
We are located in Socorro, NM which offers a variety of activities including numerous hiking, rock climbing and biking area as well as excellent access to ski resorts around the state. The town itself has all the charm and ease of a small town but with a major city (Albuquerque) only an hour's drive away.
