Mission Statement Of The Department Of Mathematics



The New Mexico Tech Department of Mathematics serves the diverse population of New Mexico by integrating preparatory education, the general education core, service courses for science and engineering, and mathematics majors at the undergraduate and graduate level. We also contribute mathematical and interdisciplinary research, and public service.

Our mission is to:

1. help students learn foundation of mathematics and creative approaches to addressing mathematical problems;

2. acknowledge state and national diversity by developing an inclusive learning environment for all students;

3. create and communicate mathematical knowledge;

4. collaborate with other researchers in solving engineering and scientific problems.


Students graduating from our BS program in Mathematics will be able to:

1. Write and understand mathematical proofs; think logically.

2. Use mathematics from a variety of areas to formulate and analyze applied problems; present their work in a professional manner.

3. Demonstrate a depth of understanding in a sub-area of Mathematics.


Students graduating from our MS program in Mathematics will be able to:

1. Take on a significant mathematical or statistical project, solve the problem, and communicate the results of their research.

2. Be successful in their postgraduate academic and professional careers.

3. Learn new Mathematics on their own.


Students graduating from our PhD program in Mathematics will be able to:

1. Produce high quality work.

2. Be successful in their postgraduate academic and professional careers.
