Book Burning

Ok. I like to think that I am pretty laid back about many things, and I respect peoples Constitutional rights, but when I read that a pastor of Chris Community Church is going to have a book burning to destroy the works of J.K. Rowlings ("Harry Potter") I get a bit upset.

I would not be nearly as upset if not for the following facts from todays newspaper...

The pastor is planning on burning other items that "exalt Satan" such as pornography and heavy metal albums.

The pastor "he couldn't recall hearing any reports of children engaging in harmful practices as a result of reading the series."

"He admitted he has not ready any of the books or seen the movie." I think this is the biggest problem I have. He is condemning the books without ever reading them, and by burning them he is telling his parish to condemn the books as well. But they may not know he has never read them.

"He said the books could inspire children to learn about real witchcraft practices such as Wicca." I seriously doubt he knows anything about the Wicca practice. It has nothing to do with flying around on a broomstick or zapping things with a magic wand.

The pastor said "he was not concerned with any public image the book burning might give himself or the congregation." Then why are you holding a publicized book burning. Of course you are concerned with public image. That is what a book burning is for.

Overall, book burnings make me nervous.
