The WinTV PCI boards give you live video-in-a-window

These PCI boards connect to your cable TV or to a TV antenna, and display live TV in a resizable window. They do this by digitizing the live video (from either the built-in 125-channel cable TV tuner or the external video-input source) using high quality 4:2:2 video sampling. The digitized video is sent over the PCI bus into the memory of a VGA display adapter, a technique which makes the WinTV PCI boards easy to install and gives a great looking TV picture!

While live video is being displayed, these boards can also extract either Intercast data (in the United States) or teletext data (in Europe) from the TV signal.

The WinCast/TV, WinTV-pci, WinTV-radio and WinTV-primio boards have similar product specifications.
The primary differences are:

  • WinCast boards support Intercast data reception in the United States, and are bundled with the Intel Intercast Viewer.
  • The WinTV-pci, WinTV-primio and WinTV-radio support Teletext data reception in Europe. Included is our VTPlus software, for multiple teletext page display and DDE (dynamic data exchange).

WinCast/TV .. bringing TV and Intercast Web pages to your PC

Hauppauge's WinCast/TV is a single slot PCI card which has a 125-channel cable-ready TV tuner and a video digitizer. It displays live video in a resizable window on your PC screen. WinCast/TV also separates Intercast Web pages from the TV signal (Intercast is not broadcast in all areas, so check with your local TV broadcaster), and using Intel’s Intercast Viewer, displays Intercast Web pages in a window alongside the live TV window.

WinTV-pci, WinTV-primio and WinTV-radio ..
bringing TV and Professional teletext into your PC

Hauppauge’s WinTV-pci and WinTV-radio are single slot PCI cards with 125-channel TV-tuners. The TV-source can be from aerial or cable TV. With the external audio/video inputs, you can also connect to a satellite receiver or VCR, camcorder or video camera. The WinTV-pci and WinTV-radio also extract Teletext data from the TV signal, and include VTPlus, the Professional Teletext software.

TV just got better!

Watch TV-in-a-window plus capture pro-quality still and motion video images to your hard disk with WinCast/TV. Convenient controls like single click no-title mode and TV-mode give WinTV the feel of a well tuned sports car.
WinTV’s motion video capture will make digital video movies on your PC’s hard disk. Create high impact multimedia presentations by adding snappy video images and digital movies to Powerpoint, Compel or multimedia authoring packages such as Authorware and Toolbook. And the professional quality still video image’s are compatible with all image editing software packages.

SnapShot:
Capture super hi-res video images

The WinTV-SnapShot program, bundled with all WinTV PCI boards, allows you to capture high resolution video images from TV or any external video source. Developed by Hauppauge in 1997, WinTV-SnapShot supports 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480 and 320x240 pixel images in TIF, BMP. GIF and JPEG image formats. SnapShot is great for capturing images for desktop publishing or Web development.

WinCast/TV:
Intercast Web pages are delivered real-time

Intercast Web pages add a new dimension to TV shows by allowing TV producers to add real-time information to their broadcasts. These pages are standard Internet Web pages, but instead of being sent over telephone lines, they’re sent with TV signals over the airwaves! For example, while broadcasting a sports event, the TV producer might send Intercast Web pages showing statistics plus the personal Web pages of participants in the event.

WinCast/TV:
Get more out of the TV you watch

In addition to Web pages, broadcasters using the Intercast medium can add other types of information to their TV transmissions. They might send real time stock market information along with their Web pages. Included is Intel’s Intercast viewer, which will display stock market information in the viewer toolbar if it detects that this information is present in the TV signal.

The WinTV PCI boards have these great features:

  • Live TV-in-a-window on VGA monitors from 640x480 to 1280x1024 in up to 16 million colors.
  • Built-in cable ready TV tuner: a 125-channel cable TV tuner with automatic channel scan.

The WinTV-pci's also have VTPlus, the Professional Teletext software. Save teletext pages to disk in graphics or text formats, or directly to your spreadsheet with VTPlus's active DDE links. Mulitple pages can be displayed on your VGA screen, along with subpages. VtPlus operates in a resizable window along-side the WinTV application.

Technical Overview of the WinTV-pci and WinCast/TV:

The WinTV PCI is a digital video in-lay board with TV, image and clip capture plus Intercast data or Teletext data reception. A bus-master PCI slot is required, plus a VGA card with DirectDraw 3.0 (or later) and Windows 95. In addition to displaying live video in a window, individual video images and video clips can be digitized and stored to disk.

Live video is digitized from either the built-in 125-channel cable TV tuner or an external video-input source using high quality 4:2:2 video sampling. The digitized video is sent over the PCI bus in your PC into the memory of your VGA display adapter. This allows the digitized video to move efficiently, and takes a fraction of the available bandwidth of the PCI bus.

Your PC’s VGA graphics adapter needs Windows 95 DirectDraw support. VGA cards tested for compatiblity with the WinTV PCI boards are:

  • S3 Trio64V+,Trio32/64, Vision968 and ViRGE
  • Cirrus Logic 5446 and 5464 dual monitor display adapters
  • Matrox Millenium and Mystique
  • Hercules Dynamite 128 (and other ET6000 based VGA cards)
  • ATI Mach64 and Rage II series of graphics display adapters.

Hardware Specifications:

General specifications
Video digitized using YUV 4:2:2 color format at 60 fields per second (50 fps in PAL.) Maximum digitized image size: 640x480 for NTSC video sources, 758x576 for PAL.

Memory segment and interrupts
Requires one interrupt and a memory segment, which are automatically assigned by Windows 95 Plug-and-Play setup. Memory segment can be manually adjusted by the user.

VGA Compatibility
All of the WinTV PCI boards work with most PCI VGA cards in 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 with vertical refresh rates up to 125Hz. Supports color modes up to 16 million colors. The 256 color mode is not recommended, since in this mode the video image is palettized, causing color distortion.
Does not require connections to the VGA card, either internal or external. Requires that the VGA card have an updated DirectDraw driver.

Video Clip Capture
Save continuous video at 320x240 at up to 30 frames per second. (Actual save capability is determined by the speed of the PC and the hard disk drive.) Creates Microsoft Video for Windows compatible AVI files in an uncompressed YUV format.

Intel Intercast Viewer overview:

(for use in North America)

Intercast Web pages are broadcast in a little used portion of the TV signal called the Vertical Blanking Interval. The Vertical Blanking Interval (or VBI as it is called in the TV Broadcast Industry) is normally used by TV sets as a dead time in the live video signal where the TV set can position the TV’s electron beam to the top of the picture tube. The live portion of a TV image is composed of 480 horizontal video lines. The VBI has 45 blank lines. Up to 10 of the VBI lines can be used for the transmission of Intercast Web pages, and each line can have 35 bytes of data. Since TV signals are broadcast at 30 frames per second, Intercast broadcasts have the ability to send up to 10,500 bytes per second continuously. That’s about as fast as the new high speed ISDN telephone lines!

The VBI signal which delivers the Web pages may not be available in all areas. Call your local cable operator to confirm availability. WinCast/TV moves raw, undecoded Intercast content into system memory and the live video image into the VGA display memory. From system memory, the Intel Intercast Viewer decodes the raw data, producing HTML Web pages for display in the viewer’s Web window. These pages are standard HTML documents, and can include formatted text plus graphics.

The Intercast Viewer decodes Intercast Content and formats the Web window. It also takes the real time information (if transmitted by the TV broadcaster) and displays it in the toolbar.

The viewer caches Intercast Web pages that it receives and keeps a list of these pages. You can move through the received pages, just as you can with Internet Web pages received over phone lines. The Web Browser Controls and Media Library window lists Web pages, snapshots and bookmarks. It also contains the Channel Indicator and New Web page button for the Intercast Application.

Some Intercast Web pages include links to other Internet resources. If your PC has a telephone Internet connection, you can “link” over the Internet via telephone to these resources. For example, a home shopping Intercast Broadcast provider might include links to allow on-line buying!
