Lab Information
This semester I am teaching a Phys 122 lab: Intro to Electricity and Magnetism. Many of the links below may be helpful to you in lab or in writing your lab report. For a list of the labs in the order we will be doing them, see here.
Edmodo Information
We will be using Edmodo this semester for submission of lab reports and grade recording. As such, students will need to sign up for an account. Should you have forgotten, the group code for this semester is: i6drr0.
- For the website, proceed to Edmodo
- For help signing up, consult the guide here
- For help submitting your first lab report, click here
Saving Reports as a PDF
Since I ask that you submit your lab reports as pdfs, below are some guidelines on how to do so, in case you are confused!
- For Openoffice: Simply click the "Export as PDF" button on the toolbar. If it is not there, you can also access it from the File menu.
- For Word 2007: Click the round Office button in the upper left, navigate to "Save As", and click "PDF or XPS". Then make sure that you select pdf in the "Save as Type" list after typing your filename.
- For Word 2003: This is a bit more tricky. Word 2003 doesn't support pdf saving by default. Two options however are:
- Standalone Program: You can try the program here.
- Adding as Printer: You can also add a pdf "printer". This is the method I have used in the past. Download this and unzip and install it. This will add a printer to your system called "Bullzip PDF Printer". Now, whenever you want to save a document as a pdf, treat it instead as if you are printing it using this printer. After hitting print a dialogue box will appear asking you what you want to save it as.
Adding Equations to your Lab
As I require a calculations section, you will need to devise a suitable way of entering equations into your lab. MS Word comes with an equation editor that is very simple, yet somewhat slow and clunky. If you desire a faster method of generating typed equations (albeit with a slightly higher learning curve, check here. You can simply generate an image and then paste that into your report. I will add some more tips on using LaTeX in the coming days.
Lab Expectations and Writeup Guide
In case you should have happened to lose (gasp!) the syllabus that was handed to you at the beginning of the semester, you can always check here below. A copy will also be posted on Edmodo.
Past Example Labs
These labs are intended to give you some idea of the formatting and layout of what I expect in this class. Both would warrant high A's according to my grading scheme. Note that these labs ARE from this semester's lab. Please do not plagarize them, as I will be checking!
