Course Content: Chapters 1 through 13

Objectives: Recognition of those questions, which are statistical by nature. To develop the ability to describe a data set, to articulate hypotheses concerning the data, to apply the appropriate tests and correctly interpret the results of these tests in order to confirm or reject theses hypotheses. Topics included will be graphical and numerical methods for summarizing data, an introduction to probability, sampling techniques, discrete and continuous distributions, hypothesis testing, linear and non-linear regression and analysis of variance. The ability to use computer software to analyze data and appropriate language skills for reporting the computer output will be considered part of the course.

Policies: This course is scheduled in such a way as to permit the convenient realization of the stated objectives above. Most students will find it necessary to attend the classes, take notes and ask questions to be successful in this class. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to make up any work. If you miss a test or homework assignment it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to make it up. (Be prepared to provide a plausible justification for being late.)  The work provided is sufficient to demonstrate your understanding of the material. If you are concerned about your grade, focus on the assigned work during the semester. Do not ask for extra credit at the end of the course.

Homework: Homework will be collected each class day. A total of 125 questions are assigned. I will base the percentage out of 110 allowing you to miss 15 and still have a perfect score. You will need to remove any frills, if you use a spiral notebook. On the first page of each assignment make sure you have your name. Papers without names will be discarded. If there is more than one sheet, staple the sheets together, do not fold, chew or use any other means of fastening. Label all problems clearly with chapter number and problem number. If there is not sufficient work to justify your answer, or if your work is illegible, no credit will be given. Use computer, calculator, or whatever seems appropriate for all assignments.

Testing: There will be four tests, with two quizzes each test period, and a comprehensive final. Missed quizzes will be replaced with the next test and missed tests (one only) will be replaced with the final.

Project: A project will be assigned that requires each student to demonstrate the ability to perform the stated course objectives.

Grades: Your grades will be determined as follows:

Lab 15%, Homework 10%, Quizzes 10%, Tests 30%, Project 15%, and Final 20%.

All work will be graded and returned as quickly as possible.

Help: Please seek help if you need it. See me during office hours, or go by the tutoring lab in Weir 220.
