Novosibirsk State
University was founded in May 1959
in the USSR in
a program of estabilishing a Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
According to world scientific standards, Novosibirsk
State University was one of the most famous universities in USSR
(now is Russia)
and consequently in the world. The university is located in Akodemgorodok
(where I was born), 20 kilometers from the city of Novosibirsk,
a cultural center of Siberia (and in some sense,
intellectual center of Russia).
The total number of students in the year 2007 was 7200.
Akademgorodok (Academy
Town) is a unique place in the
world. It was was founded in the 1950s by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. It
was designed specifically for scientific purposes. Academician Mikhail
Alexeyevich Lavrentyev, a physicist and mathematician, the first Chairman of
the Siberian Division of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, played a prominent
role in establishing Akademgorodok. At its peak, Akademgorodok was home to
65,000 outstanding, world-known scientists and their families, and was a
privileged area to live in.
