Things to do after reaching Tech:
Here are a few instructions that will help you get started on Campus. Obviously,
this short document does not cover everything that needs to be done. It simply
attempts to serve as a handy reference sheet that you can carry around.
Please follow the following sequence for your convenience.
1.0 Go to the International Students Centre. Let them know that you are on campus.
2.0 Director of
International Studies will then guide you.
3.0 Director of International Student will then contact your advisor or department
head and will forward you to him. International Student Office will also provide you campus map.
4.0 Your advisor will then register you for courses for the semester, write a contract
(if you got assistantship) and will then forward you to Registrar Office
5.0 At the Registrar office you need to give contract written by your advisor and they
will charge for tution and fee from your contract amount. If you do not have funding then
pay your tution and fee.
6.0 At Registrar's Office you will get your student ID.
7.0 Go to Tech Computer Centre to get your tech computer id i.e. login id to
access computers and also the email id as xyz@nmt.edu
8.0 Go to Bank (usually Bank of America) and open an account. Deposit your money. You
will be given temporary checks which you can use to make payments. In a week or
two you will get a ATM Debit card which you can then use to make payments and purchase.
Members of INSA will help you in opening bank account.
9.0 Purchase your insurance either one endorsed by school or from private company.
10.0 If you have an assistantship or any kind of job, you will need to go to the
Social Security Officer to get SSN. Social Security Officer comes to Socorro on every
second and last Tuesday at Senior Citizens Centre. This is at walking distance from Tech.
This is not very urgent. It will be required to get your paperwork done so that you can
be paid. When you go to the SSN office, remember to take your passport, I-20, I-94
and proof of employment with you.
Wishing you the best of luck, INSA
