A continuation of HIST 141, including Reconstruction, the Industrial Revolution, the agrarian revolt, imperialism, the emergence of modern America, the Progressive movement, social and intellectual trends, the New Deal, and America as a world power.

The evolution of the major Eurasian civilizations from the beginning of historical times to the beginning of the 16th century, with special reference to social, political, and cultural developments.

Overview of the cultural history of the Iberian world on both sides of the Atlantic from the earliest cultural expression to the current Hispanic presence in the United States. Multicultural creations of Hispanic societies. Cultural productions, i.e., fiestas, toreo, music, painting, literature, graffiti -- in their political, economic, and historical background. Evolution of federal policy toward the American Indians from colonial times to the present. Legal history, treaties and reservations, assimilation, reform movements, Indian wars, popular images of Native Americans, self-determination, economic development, land and water rights.

The United States and the period of Civil War; social, political, and economic causes of the Civil War; the war years and Reconstruction.

The study of the American westward movement, with emphasis on the Trans-Mississippi West; the forces that drove the American onto the frontier; the exploration and settling of the West; the fur trade; the mining frontier, the farm frontier, the cattle frontier; the impact of the westward movement on American history.

An analytical examination of the policymaking process within the American political system, with special attention to who is involved in the process, how decisions are made, and what the consequences are of alternative policy choices.
