1) Early Warning Timely Response      U.S. Department of Education

Explicitly summarizes school violence prevention in an exhaustively detailed manner.  The areas that are covered are:

  • Characteristics of a school that is safe and responsive to all children.

  • Early Warning signs.

  • Getting help for troubled children.

  • Developing a prevention and response plan.

Overall, a very good site for school violence prevention.

2) Keep Schools Safe

There is information for concerned parents, teachers/school administrators and Law Enforcement Officers.  There are many school safety resources including:

  • Handling crisis situations.

  • What students can do.

  • How parents can get involved.

  • Effective prevention strategies for drug and alcohol.

  • Gangs, conflicts, weapons.

  • Model approaches to school safety.

  • Discipline codes that work.

  • State by state resources.

There purpose it to provide up to date info on successful programs and ideas to help communities work toward safer schools and devise the most appropriate response to preventing school violence.  Great site!

3) National School Safety and Security Services

This site offers professional services, school security assessments, crisis training, consulting, security product vendors, publications, articles and bibliographies:

  • School Crisis Preparedness Book.

  • Practical School Security Book.

  • Reducing School Violence: How to Prepare for any Sort of Violence.

Also on this site are free resources on elementary school safety, funding school safety programs, uniforms: dress and book bags and State level strategies for school safety.  There is a good subsection on the topic of bombs which covers:

  • Bombs and School Security.

  • Bomb Threat Checklist.

  • Bomb Threats and Physical Security Planning.

Plus links to publications on firearms and explosives and arson and fire.

Click here to go directly to the subsection on bombs.

4) Nettleton Public Schools Crisis Manual

Great guide to follow as a crisis response plan.  There was a lot of thought that went into the manual and is one of the best I've seen.  The crisis manual was created in response to the Jonesboro incident.  A plan of this caliber should be a must for every school district.

5) The Center: Safe School Resources - Crisis Intervention Resources

Instructions on what to do during and after a crisis: helping children cope with disaster: a handout for teachers and parents.  Also on this site are some good crisis response links.
