Health Care and Insurance

NMT Student Health Center and Student Health Insurance Brochure - Prepared by students for students, this copy of the printed brochure contains information about the student health center, health insurance and how to best integrate the services provided by each.  Information provided includes: location, hours, contact information, services and procedures.

Health Center - New Mexico Tech undergraduate and graduate students (and dependents if elected) are served by the on-campus Health Center.  The center is currently available to students when classes are in session, for forty hours per week.  The center is staffed by fully qualified medical practitioners and provides a level of care similar to that available from your family doctor.

In addition to the services available on-campus, students and their dependents will find several options for health care in Socorro.  Socorro General Hospital is a regional facility that is ranked highly by accrediting agencies.  There are two group medical practices in Socorro, each staffed by several physicians, including the more common specialties.  There are typically one or two additional doctors in individual practice.  Major medical facilities are available a 'short drive' away in Albuquerque where there are several hospitals that rank nationally for their specialized services.

Health Insurance - All students at New Mexico Tech are required to maintain health insurance while in attendance.  Prior to August 2004, the Institute negotiated health insurance coverage with providers and students subscribed through the Institute.

  • The Institute has "endorsed" an insurance plan available directly to students online.  For information regarding this program visit the United Health Care web pages.

  • Your health insurance is eligible for coverage under a supplemental deferred payment plan (GDP) if you are on contract as a TA or RA.   At the beginning of each semester do the following to take advantage of the supplemental GDP:

  • You will need a copy of your contract for the coming semester.  If you received a 9-month contract in Fall, come by the Graduate Office at the beginning of Spring semester and we will make you a copy of your contract should you need one.

  • DO NOT REGISTER FOR YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE ONLINE.  Instead, visit Andrea Jojola, Wells 111.  Indicate that you have a contract (show her the copy) and want to take advantage of the supplemental GDP.  Andrea will ask you to sign an enrollment form and make an entry in Banner.

  • Proceed to Student Accounts (Gigi Ngo) to process your standard GDP (for tuition and fees) and to set up your supplemental GDP to cover your health insurance.  Payments for your insurance premium will be deducted from pay over the spring semester.

  • Online use of this plan does require that you have the ability to make payment by credit card.

  • To date, our experience with this provider has been favorable, but you are not obliged to purchase this particular insurance.  You are encouraged to find the plan (online or elsewhere) that best suits your needs.

    • A Google search of health insurance providers is a place to start.  Before you enlist in any online program, make certain that providers (doctors, dentists, pharmacists) are available in the Socorro-area for the plan.  Some providers have exclusions that severely limit the utility of the program and cancel anticipated savings.

    • The Graduate Office is not aware of the performance of any of these companies and provides no endorsement of companies listed by Google.
