October 25, 2008: Chemical Engineering Teams Up with R&ED to Make Prize Winning Float

Several chemical engineering students led by Vic Briseno and Greg Arias built a parade float for the annual 49ers parade with the help of Tech’s office of Research and Economic Development. The theme of the parade was “I Shoulda Made a Left at Albuquerque”. The float contained two scenes: one showing the coyote chasing the roadrunner in an AIChE built rocket and a second scene of the coyote, played by Vice President Van Romero, roasting the roadrunner over a camp fire. The float won first prize in the parade.

June 30, 2008: Chemical Engineering Bids Farewell to Professor Don Weinkauf

Professor Don Weinkauf, the long time chair of chemical engineering, left the department in June of 2008, to become the Dean of Engineering at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Don was the guest speaker for the Chemical Engineering Spring Banquet, where he was presented with a painting of the Capitol Bar with a border signed by students and colleagues.

Don came to New Mexico Tech in 1996 from Shell Oil. He was instrumental in starting up the Department of Chemical Engineering and guiding it to the position it is currently in. All of us wish Don, Holly, Madeline, Eli, and Roan well in Minnesota.
