E Summer Mini Course Twelve
high school students from around the country attended the week long
summer mini-course in Chemical Engineering. The purpose of the course
was to give students an introduction to the field of Chemical Engineering
and taste of "college-life" (including dorm food!!). The
students studied a range of topics in the field including fluid mechanics,
combustion, polymer materials, fuel cells, thermocouples, and explosives.
Highlights of the week including assessing the combustion efficiency
of a potato cannon and watching an explosives demonstration at New
Mexico Tech's Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (good
thing it was only 50lbs of explosives). The course was led by Dr.
Weinkauf and John Marshall. With an exception for the dorm food, the
students apparently had a blast. Afterall, what should learning be
about? The Chemical Engineering course is one of the more popular among eleven mini-courses offered each summer in various disciplines. This year over 70 students participated in the program campus-wide. To learn more about the minicourse programs at New Mexico Tech click the following NMT minicourse link.
