The Department of Chemistry will host the 2012 New Mexico Chemistry Symposium on November 9th.  This annual, statewide event will be held at the New Mexico Tech campus in the Fidel Center Ballroom.  Students, faculty, and scientists in chemistry and related fields are invited to register for the event (see: http://infohost.nmt.edu/~chem/symp/index.html).  Registration is free for undergraduates and just $15 for graduate students.  The event includes talks by notable chemists and a student poster session with prizes.  The theme of this year's symposium is "Chemistry and the Environment."

This year's speakers include a keynote address by Donald Blake, winner of the 2013 American Chemical Society Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology and a Distinguished Professor at UC-Irvine.  He will speak on  "Why are Atmospheric Measurements Important for a Better Understanding of Health, the Environment, and Climate?"  Stephen Cabaniss from the University of New Mexico will speak on his recent work on the "Biogeochemistry and Remediation of Uranium Contamination" in the four corners area.  Scott Elliot, from Los Alamos National Laboratory, will speak on "What’s Cool Coming Out of the Ocean from an Earth System Model?"

The symposium is sponsored by the Central New Mexico Section of the American Chemical Society as well as the Department of Chemistry, Office of the President, and the Office of Graduate Studies at New Mexico Tech.
