Why study chemistry?

One popular general chemistry textbook describes chemistry as “the central science.” We wholeheartedly agree. The science covered in any undergraduate chemistry program provides explanations to many of life’s fundamental processes, including our own metabolic processes; the structure and behavior of many substances, from the ubiquitous water molecule to the most advanced metal alloy or polymer composite; the composition and chemical reactions of Earth’s atmosphere and natural waters; and the activity and effectiveness of today’s modern medicines.

A chemistry major is an excellent preparation for a wide range of future endeavors. These include graduate school in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, environmental science, and applied fields such as materials and polymer science. It also provides an excellent preparation for medical, dental, and veterinary schools. Employment is possible in wide range of industries, from chemical manufacturing, to pharmaceuticals and agriculture. Employment rates for chemists are typically very high, > 90%.

Why study chemistry at New Mexico Tech?

The chemistry department at New Mexico Tech prides itself on its dedication to its undergraduate majors. Our undergraduates receive individual attention early in their career at New Mexico Tech. Many chemistry majors begin undergraduate research in faculty labs as freshmen or sophomores. More than 60 percent of Tech chemistry graduates continue their education in graduate school. Many have become teachers, medical doctors, or research scientists. Graduates from New Mexico Tech receive a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree accredited by the American Chemical Society.

The fundamental mission of the Department of Chemistry is to provide students with: (1) the skills necessary for critical and analytical thinking; (2) an understanding of the basic concepts of chemistry; (3) an appreciation of chemistry and its central place among the sciences; (4) a feeling for the joys and frustrations of original research; and (5) the ability to communicate observations and discoveries.

The Department of Chemistry offers a balance between pure and applied chemistry and presents science as part of a liberal education. The faculty is qualified in the major divisions of chemistry - inorganic, organic, analytical, physical, and biochemical. The undergraduate program emphasizes development of a strong foundation in the fundamental areas of chemistry in order to prepare students for the diverse career opportunities available to chemists. Laboratory facilities support research in all major areas of chemistry, as well as environmental and medicinal chemistry. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged. The department maintains a full complement of modern analytical instrumentation.
