Dadn's Charmed Life

Ed Blakslee's Birthday Signature Quilt

A Quilt by Betty Blakslee Reynolds

Dadn's Birthday Signature Quilt

Machine pieced on paper foundations designed by Debby Kratovil,, this quilt is machine quilted (62 x 86 inches). There are 236 3" signature blocks arranged in groups of four, signed by about 400 family members and friends of my father, Edward Blakslee, to celebrate his 80th birthday in April 1998. The signature blocks are alternated with 72 topical fabric blocks that represent things of significance in Dadn's life.

The Topical Fabrics

I asked each family member to tell me words that reminded them of Dad. We came up with this list:

Arizona, Barnegat lighthouse, bingo, books, bottles, canoe, church, coffee, $$$, fireworks at Veterans Acres, fishing in the North Woods, Ford Mustang, genealogy, golf, Illinois, Italy, New Jersey shore, pipe, Purdue University, raccoon, reefs and reef fishes, roadrunners, rowboat, sailboat, salamanders in the window wells, SAR, snorkeling, snowskiing, soccer, squirrels, tools, trains, tricks or treats, US Army in WWII, violin, wine, world travel

The following wonderful net-quilters helped me by sending topical fabrics: Sari Lynn Goldbaum, Charlotte Kieliszek, Sharon Little, Anjii Solomon, and the 2nd/3rd grade class at Sunrise Elementary School in Pratt, Kansas.
