Quilts, Quilters,
Quilting, and Patchwork in Fiction for Children and Young Adults
Quilts, Quilters, Quilting, and Patchwork in Fiction for Children
and Young Adults
A Bibliography Maintained by Betty Reynolds
This website is made possible by Amazon.com. Please
follow the links to purchase books. Thanks!
This list started as a suggestion on rec.crafts.textiles.quilting
that we should share information about fiction which includes quilts,
quilters, quilting, or patchwork. Since that time, quilters on other
discussion groups worldwide have added titles to the list. This
list includes fiction and poetry for children (including easy picture books) and young adults. Fiction for adults is in a separate
list.
Several primary school teachers have written to tell me that they teach a
unit on quilting and mathematics. Susan Druding has
written a very useful article on Quilting
with Children for teachers and parents with links to web sites on the
mathematical aspects of quilting and more, so I am not including any
"nonfiction" in this list. You might also want to visit Heddi Craft's Quilting
with Children site about her experience quilting with rural Kansas
sixth graders which includes many useful links to other sites.
Do your children like to listen to audiobooks? Then look for the
cassette icons in the list. And be
sure to let me know if you find other children's quiltfiction titles on
tape.
If you have suggestions for additions to this list, please e-mail Betty Reynolds. Annotations are
particularly welcome. Other annotated lists of children's quilting
fiction are posted by Millville
(Utah) School's 4th/5th grade class of 1994/95, and reviewers'
comments from QuiltNet.
According to Quilter's
Newsletter Magazine, no.284, July/Aug.
1996, p.63, a booklet is available that lists 87 books with quilting
themes for juveniles published between 1863 and 1994. Stitch Me a

sisters sewed the patches, and then they all quilted the pieced beauty.
The lovely Log Cabin quilt would be sold at an auction to pay for the neighbor
man's hospital stay. Nobody guessed that the quilt would disappear
before it could be sold. Reuben and his imaginative family face a new
adventure--and one that tests their Amish way of working.
