Dr. Geoffrey B. Smith

Environmental Microbiology @ NMSU: Biodetection and Biofuels Work

My laboratory work is currently focused in two areas: 1. development of methods to detect microbial pathogens in a messy, environmental context, and 2. development of biological approaches to convert wastes to energy resources. An introduction will be given to these topics and representative biodetection projects, for example, a source-tracking study in northern New Mexico, and an ion mobility-based approach to get real-time information on environmental pathogens, will be outlined. The rest of the talk will focus on our efforts to convert agricultural wastes to hydrogen in a process called biohydrogenesis or to convert wastes to electricity in microbial fuel cells.

Dr. Geoffrey B. Smith is a Professor in New Mexico State University's Biology Department and Molecular Biology Program. He received his Ph.D. in Soil Microbiology from North Carolina State University.
